Hindi Poem – ‘Jugnu’

A Hindi poem called ‘Jugnu’. Firefly to the world and ‘Jugnu’ to our Hindi speaking folks. Different names yet if you ask a child about a firefly. They will have their own unique story around this glowing minibeast.

Written by Seema Verma and recited by delightful Sia. This composition describes the gleaming fireworks these creatures bring for our eyes.

I haven’t seen a single child who is not fascinated by Fireflies. Having played the roles of a mother and a teacher both. I have heard many tales of how they ran after a firefly, only catch it in their hand or a glass jar. And how they showed it off to their friends and family.

Come Summer holidays we would get the opportunity of staying up late and playing with friends in the lawns. Stargazing and catching fireflies with cousins or friends was the activity of our choice. There would be times when we would want to keep those glowing beasts as pets. Only to find a few days later that it wasn’t such a good idea and we should have better left them free.

The fact that glittering city lights have dulled the charms of this glowing catch. Few children these days get to have these real-life experiences. Whenever they do. It’s a memory of a lifetime. Sadly, the numbers of fireflies are declining. Due to climate change and harvesting of a certain chemical from their body is causing this. They disappear every time their habitats are destroyed. Have your children experience this light show before it disappears completely.
