Face value and Place value of a digit in a Number

Face Value:

  • The face value of a digit in a number is the digit itself. 
  • The face value of a digit is not dependent on its position in the number. 

For example, in number 368

face value of 3 is 3 

face value of 6 is 6

face value of 8 is 8

Place Value:

The place value of a digit in a number depends upon the position of the digit in the number. 

For example, in the number 368 

place value of 3 is 300 

place value of 6 is 60

place value of 8 is 8 

Here’s a breakdown of the place values in the number 368:

  • The digit 8 is in the ones place, so its place value is 8 × 1 = 8
  • The digit 6 is in the tens place, so its place value is 6 × 10 = 60.
  • The digit 3 is in the hundreds place, so its place value is 3 × 100 = 300.

In summary, the face value is the actual value of a digit, while the place value is the value a digit contributes to the overall number based on its position within the number.
