Nouns – Worksheets For Grade 4

Nouns – Naming Words. Building blocks of a language. We start learning about then from the very beginning. When a child is learning to speak she uses naming words first. For eg: Milk, Book etc. It’s at a later stage that she can add verbs to her speech. For eg: I need milk or I want to read a book.

Remember the game? Name Place Thing Animal. Is the most fun game I know that can be used to teach Nouns.

At school, learning Nouns is the first lesson in grammer. Here’s a crazy thought. Imagine a world without grammer. Gasp! The thought only gives me goosebumps. It is a perfect recipe of brain freeze.

Why you ask!

Because Grammer affects our writing, AS WELL AS SPEECH. And the absence of it would result in a world of chaos. Where people wouldn’t know how to express themselves effectively. This isn’t our assumption but is evidence-based by teachers and experts on the subject.

Here’s What the Experts Say

Following is an excerpt from a report published by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE):

“Grammar is important because it is the language that makes it possible for us to talk about language. Grammar names the types of words and word groups that make up sentences not only in English but in any language. As human beings, we can put sentences together even as children—we can all do grammar. But to be able to talk about how sentences are built, about the types of words and word groups that make up sentences—that is knowing about grammar. And knowing about grammar offers a window into the human mind and into our amazingly complex mental capacity.”

“People associate grammar with errors and correctness. But knowing about grammar also helps us understand what makes sentences and paragraphs clear and interesting and precise. Grammar can be part of literature discussions when we and our students closely read the sentences in poetry and stories. And knowing about grammar means finding out that all languages and all dialects follow grammatical patterns.”

This session on Nouns is created for Grade 4. The child is using his skills like creative writing, logical thinking and drawing to dive deeper into the concept.
