Successor and Predecessor of a number

What are whole numbers?

Let us first understand what whole numbers are.

Numbers 0,1,2,3,4,5,6…… and so on are whole numbers.

When we say Successor and Predecessor of a number, the number in focus is a whole number.

Let’s learn the meaning of Successor and Predecessor of a number

What do we mean by the Predecessor of a whole number?

The number that comes just before a number is called the Predecessor.

For Example

The Predecessor of 100 is 99. Here, 99 comes just before 100.

So, the Predecessor of a given number is one less than the given number. We can observe that 99 is one less than 100, so 99 is the Predecessor of 100.

What do we mean by the Successor of a whole number?

The number that comes just before a number is called the Successor.

For Example,

The Successor of 100 is 101. Here, 101 comes just after 100.

So, the Successor of a given number is one more than the given number. We can observe that 101 is one more than 100, so 101 is the Successor of 100.

Interesting observation

If the Successor of 99 is 100, then 99 is Predecessor of 100.

How do you find the Successor of a number?

The Successor of any number is obtained by adding 1 to the number.

For Example,

99 +1 = 100; therefore, 100 is the Successor of 99.

The number which comes immediately after a particular number is called its Successor.

We observe that every whole number has its Successor.

Number + 1 = Successor

How do you find the Predecessor of a number?

The Predecessor of any number is obtained by subtracting 1 from the number.

For Example,

100 -1 = 99; therefore, 99 is the Predecessor of 100

Number - 1 = Predecessor

We observe that every number other than zero has its Predecessor. The whole number 0 does not have any predecessor.

What is the Successor of 100 and Predecessor of 100?

Successor of 100 = 100+1=101 ( 101 comes just after 100)

Predecessor of 100 = 100-1 = 99 ( 99 comes just before 100)
